Poland relaxes EU Blue Card rules

The Polish government has introduced more relaxed EU Blue Card rules that expand professional experience criteria, reduce contract durations, and relax intra-EU mobility rules.
  • Expanded professional experience eligibility criteria
Applicants who have at least three years of relevant professional experience are now eligible for a Polish EU Blue Card, even if they lack relevant educational qualifications. This change creates a larger pool of applicants from which employers can recruit.
  • Reduced mandatory employment contract durations
Employment contracts now only need to be six months in duration, down from the previous 12-month minimum, giving employers greater flexibility in hiring highly skilled foreign professionals.
  • Relaxed intra-EU mobility rules
EU Blue Card holders can now move to Poland from another EU Member State and take up employment more easily. This creates more flexibility for employers to move talent permanently to Poland.
  • Relaxed qualifying conditions for EU long-term residence permit
Time spent on certain other types of residence permits in other EU Member states now counts towards the five-year total required to apply for an EU long-term residence permit.
  • Expanded access to the Polish labour market
Polish EU Blue Cards are no longer tied to a specific employer or job position, giving both employers and highly skilled foreign nationals greater labour market flexibility.
AGS Poland anticipates that, by allowing permit holders to settle and work in Poland more easily, the revised regulations will boost long-term in-country talent retention.
